In 1625, when Sweden was busy building an empire around the Baltic Sea, Swedish King Gustavus Adolf ordered new warships. Among them was the Wasa. On its maiden voyage in 1628, the Wasa put to sea and saluted. However, after only a few minutes of sailing, the ship began to heel. It straightened up slightly - and tilted again and, to everyone's horror and disbelief, the magnificent and powerful ship suddenly sank.
